Make Music Workshop 2009
On Saturday 24th October Coleshill Town Band held its third ‘MAKE MUSIC’ workshop to introduce another group of children to making music with CbB and CYB. With the workshop starting at 10.00am an early start was required in order to set up the hall and the classrooms of Coleshill Primary School ready for the event. With everything ready band members (CTB, CYB and CbB) started arriving and began familiarising themselves with the plan for the day.
At 9.45am the nervous looking workshop participants started arriving, were welcomed and registered and sat down ready to be officially welcomed and to watch the massed bands of CYB and CbB play a short demonstration concert. After this welcome the children were divided in to groups and began their first activity – instrument demonstration and trials. This is a very important part of the workshop as it gives the children the basics of holding an instrument and producing a sound from an instrument. It also enables the children to be assessed to see which instrument they are suited to.
Socialising is just as important during the day as it enables the children to mix and form friendships not only with each other but also with existing members of CYB and CbB. The breaks also enable CTB members to meet and compare notes and assess and assign the correct instrument to the children. With this done learning and making music could begin. During the rest of the morning children learned to read and perform simple rhythms together and also learned more about their assigned instrument including producing different notes. This enabled them to have a go at playing their first tune ‘When The Saints’ in unison. Playing in a band together was the perfect end to the morning session and really left the children buzzing during the lunch break and eager to get back and learn more!
The afternoon session enabled the children to further develop their new skills with more work both in groups and in the full band. The children continued learning ‘When The Saints’ in unison but also started learning to play different parts to enable them to play in harmony. The afternoon just flew by and soon the children were preparing for their end of workshop presentation concert. Parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters arrived in good time anxious to see how their children had done. They were to be surprised and thrilled!
With the children taking the stage in a very ordered and professional manner (even at this early stage CTB instils performance skills) the children were able to demonstrate everything they had learnt during the day – reading and performing rhythms, playing in unison and playing in harmony. The presentation concert also enabled the parents to learn more about the band and it’s values, something that seemed to really impress them. The day came to a close with all the workshop participants being presented with a certificate before a final perform of ‘When The Saints’. And so a fantastic day came to an end and, with children and parents thanking those involved for their work, it was clear everyone had done their job and inspired more children to join the band and make music, taking the membership of the organisation to over 100!
A big, big thank you to everyone who gave up their day to help MAKE MUSIC. What an experience!!
